Obituary for Barbara L. Roppa

Barbara L. Roppa
Barbara Louise Roppa, age 77, of Egg Harbor Township, NJ, passed away surrounded by family on Wednesday, July 5, 2017, at Calvary Hospital in Bronx, NY.

Born July 15, 1939 at Atlantic City Hospital to Barbara Lutz, Barbara was one of five children. During her younger years, she grew up in Bargaintown, NJ where she attended Cardiff School, picked and sold flowers for her grandfather and used her quarter a week earnings to watch the moving pictures at the Carlton and the Rialto in Pleasantville with her youngest aunt and lifelong best friend, Eleanor 'Dolly' Antorino.

Barbara soon moved to Greenpoint, New York, where she lived her pre-teen and teenage years. At the age of 17, she started work at Cero Wire & Cable Company in Maspeth, NY, where she met the love her life and husband of 42 years, Joseph Roppa, who she married on December 2, 1957.

With a song in her heart and a tune at her lips, Barbara touched countless lives with an unmatched wit and humor that left anyone she met laughing, along with a selfless generosity and an unconditional love for those she held dear. She loved the simple things in life like watching old TV programs and films, as well as the latest Hallmark movies; gardening; listening to the cowboys and crooners of yesteryear like Eddy Arnold, Dean Martin and Bobby Vinton; enjoying a meal out at Outback, Denny's or the diner with friends and loved ones; and simply spending quality time with the family she nurtured and watched grow throughout her 77 years.

Known to most as Barb, Bobbie or Nanny, Barbara is survived by her daughters, Darlene Matzelle of Maspeth, NY and Robin Degand of Northfield, NJ; her son-in-laws Richie and Carl; six grandchildren, Stefanie, Stacie, Ricky, Joseph, Jon and Jennifer, as well as their significant others, who she loved as much as her own grandchildren; two great-grandchildren, Sean Joseph and Shaylee; brother, Al Timmes; best friend and aunt, Eleanor Antorino; four nieces; and several cousins that she grew old with. She was pre-deceased by her husband, Joseph Roppa.

Family, friends, and others whose lives Barbara touched are invited to ADAMS PERFECT FUNERAL HOME (1650 New Rd, Northfield, NJ 08225) from 2 p.m.-4 p.m. on Saturday, July 15, 2017, to reminisce, grieve, and celebrate a wonderful individual who affected so many people's lives in a special way.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in Barbara's name to Calvary Hospital in Bronx, NY.
