Obituary for Gwendolyn E. Terrell (Miller)

Gwendolyn E. Terrell (Miller)
Terrell, Gwendolyn E., affectionately known as Gwen, was born June 7, 1950 to the late Gwendolyn Miller. She was born and raised in Atlantic City attending and graduating from Atlantic City Public Schools. Gwen, being passionate and caring, pursued a career in nursing. In addition, Gwen loved to read and took great pride in furthering her education. She would often say, “Education is truly the way to open the door for opportunities in professional excellence." She obtained her Master’s in nursing at Widener University in Chester, PA. Her love and dedication in the nursing industry afforded her a successful career at AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center as a Registered Nurse for nearly 30 years. During that time she served in many capacities – staff nurse, case manager, and Clinical Nurse Specialist.

Under her leadership and guidance, Gwen was instrumental and supportive in the lives of many new and uprising colleagues. A colleague, Vice President of Nursing, noted her dedication to the field as she was being honored by the South Jersey Chapter of the National Black Nurses’ Association, Inc. “Gwen trains established nurses to serve as mentors to students who are pursuing a career in nursing, who often face enormous obstacles but are determined to succeed. Through Gwen’s program these students receive the guidance and support they require in their quest of becoming a nurse.”
Under her tutelage, Gwen developed a mentoring program for the NAACP and Hispanic Alliance and Fellowship Program, the New Graduate Nurses Orientation Program, and was an active member of the planning committee that established Atlantic Regional Medical Center, currently known as AtlantiCare Regional Center, as a Magnet health care institution.

Although passionate about nursing, Gwen was ecstatic about her family, husband, Rodney Terrell, of nearly three decades; children, Harding Rice, and Angelic “Angel” Dawson; and “sister-nieces” –Marsha Moore, Kathy Arrington, Ellen Bell, and Charlotte Manning. While work kept her busy, Gwen would look forward to vacations, often traveling to Jamaica. Friends and family would tease that Jamaica was her and Rodney’s second home.

She was predeceased by her mother, Gwendolyn Miller, for whom she was named; sister Catherine Arrington, and nephew, Jarvis, "JD".

Gwen accepted Christ at an early age and in later years attended Faith Baptist Church, Pleasantville. On Monday, August 15, 2016, Gwen heard the voice of Jesus calling, saying to her, “Come unto Me and Rest.” She answered in the presence of her loving husband.

Her legacy and knowledge will sound loud in the hearts of her ten grandchildren: Harding, Chantel, Janae, Cherry, Patrick, Angelo, Lee, Brian, Andrew, and Angie. In addition, the many nurses in which she imparted knowledge and courage.

In addition to her loving husband, Rodney Terrell; son, Harding Rice; daughter, Angelic “Angel” Dawson (Patrick); and “Sister-nieces”- Marsha Moore, Kathy Arrington, Ellen Bell, and Charlotte Manning; Gwen is survived by brothers, David Marcus, Gilbert Marcus, Terrell Marcus, and Tommy Terry, her brothers-in-law; Sidney, Russell, Vernon, Darryl, and Anthony, her sisters-in-law; Sandy and Linda, and her special cousin, Tony.

Visitation will be from 10 am -11 am on Friday, August 26 at Faith Baptist Church, 829 Tilton Road, Pleasantville. Rev. Dr. Milton L. Hendricks, Officiating. A service of Love and Triumph will begin at 11 am at the church, with burial taking place at Egg Harbor City Cemetery, and repast at St. Paul A. M. E., Pleasantville.
