Obituary for Margaret Alzner

Margaret Alzner
ALZNER, Margaret - 97, passed away in Linwood, NJ on August 27, 2016.

Margaret was born in Plymouth, IN on February 6, 1919 to James M. and Martha (Tribolet) Artman. Shortly after her birth, the Spanish Influenza epidemic hit town. Margaret and Martha were the only newborn and mother in town to survive the epidemic. This fighting spirit helped her survive scarlet fever as a child, the Great Depression, and WWII; it surely contributed to her longevity. When WWII started, she worked in the Time and Cost Dept. of Henry Ford's Willow Run plant, Ypsilanti, MI where B-24 bombers were made. She met the famed aviator, Charles Lindbergh, there. In 1943, she moved to Calif. and worked as a Public
Accountant in Long Beach where she met and married Edward M. Alzner, an Army Air Corp pilot, on June 5, 1945 when he returned from overseas duty.

When WWII ended, she and Ed moved to Cincinnati, OH where their two daughters were born. The family moved to the Indianapolis area in 1954 and then to NJ in 1959. Margaret was active with the Girl Scouts in both IN and NJ. She became Treasurer of Central United Methodist Church, Linwood, NJ in 1968. In the 1970's, she also served on the Board of Trustees. When Ed retired in 1977, they moved to Sebring, FL, bought a motor home, and enjoyed traveling back and forth to South Jersey to see their family, and around the country.

Margaret became a self-taught genealogist and belonged to the National Genealogical Society, the DAR, and the Ohio Genealogy Society. She enjoyed golf and played bridge from the age of 6.

Margaret is predeceased by her husband, Ed; her son-in-law, Vincent Scott; her parents; and her brother, James M. Artman, Jr. She is survived by her daughters, Barbara D'Augustine (John) and Jeanette Scott; her sister, Mary-Lou Hayes of MI; her four grandchildren: Lauren Cincotta (Dave), Julia Scott, Matthew D'Augustine, and Katrina Stagliano (Christopher); and four great-grandchildren: Brooke, Anthony, Archer, and Vincent.

There will be a graveside service at Union Cemetery, Somers Point Road, Mays Landing, on Friday, September 2, 2016 at 11 AM.

In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to the charity of your choice in her name.
