William was born in Pleasantville to Mary and Joseph Taggart. Dad was an altar boy and was educated at St. Peters R.C. Church in Pleasantville. He was the oldest boy and second of 11 children. He was a member and instructor at Fort Meade of Superior Officers in Combat Techniques, and was part of the Normandy Invasion until being severely wounded by machine gun fire three miles from the US stop line outside Berlin, Germany. William was awarded a Bronze Star and the Purple Heart. He elevated to the rank of Lieutenant, and was offered the rank of Captain to reenlist, but he decided to stay near his family and left the service permanently disabled. After the war, dad became a Union Carpenter and worked full time for the Atlantic City Race Course and Fabi Construction. He loved the outdoors, golf, hunting, gardening, fishing, boating, and family.
