Obituary for Samuel S. Burch Jr.

Samuel S. Burch Jr.
Samuel S. Burch, Jr. 78 of Pleasantville and Egg Harbor Twp., NJ received final orders on June 5, 2017. Born to Samuel S. Burch, Sr. and Reo (Nelson) Burch In Atlantic City, NJ March 7, 1939. Preceding him in death are first wife Barbara(Glenn) Burch and daughter Sharon D. Burch.

Sam enlisted in US Marine Corps 1954. Retired honorably as Gunnery Sergeant in 1978. Served 3 tours in Vietnam 1965-1968. Ended his military career as drill instructor in Quantico, VA. From there he retired from Atlantic City Electric after 16 years as a dispatcher.

Sam was member of Cape Atlantic Marine Corps League, American Legion Post 352 and American Legion Riders 352, Somers Point, Absecon VFW Post 9462, and Garden State and Atlantic City CB Clubs.

Before becoming a resident at Wilmington VAMC, DE, Sam was avid motorcyclist going everywhere on 2 wheels even in snow. When not riding, Jersey Stomper was taking roll call of local CB'ers. Muletrainer was his long distance jaw-jacking skip handle. Sam was always ready with a big smile, a firm handshake, and an encouraging word from God for everyone he met. The line "there are no strangers, only friends I haven't met yet." was surely written about him.

Left to mourn and miss him are second wife Kathy (Burkett) Burch, IN, sons Kenneth (Pam) Burch, Mays Landing, Monte(Evelyn) and Elliott(Frances) Moore, NC and daughter Richell Canfield, GA, two sisters, Cynthia (Willie) Legette and Deborah Burch, and one brother, Robert (Geraldine) Burch, 8 granddaughters, 4 grandsons, 2 great grandsons and 2 great granddaughters, nieces, nephews, numerous aunts, uncles, cousins and friends.

Besides the people he loved, Sam's greatest joy was singing praises to our Lord. His beautiful tenor voice soloed in church choirs at Calvary Baptist, Mt. Pleasant UMC and the VA Chapel. You could often hear those praises echoing down the hallways from his corner room earning him the name "the singing Marine".

A Homegoing Service will be held at 10 am, Saturday June 10th, at Mt. Pleasant UMC, 801 N. Main St. Pleasantville, NJ 08232. A viewing will be from 9 am, until the time of the service. Burial will follow at Atlantic County Veterans Cemetery in Estell Manor. In lieu of flowers please send donations to Mt. Pleasant UMC.
