Obituary for George Edward Meagher Jr.

Print
George Edward Meagher Jr. died Oct. 28 at home after a courageous battle with pancreatic cancer. He was 76.
George was an accountant, whose skill for organization and record keeping was first class. He was the director of accounting for Blue Cross and Blue Shield of New Jersey for 18 years before joining the Prudential Insurance Co. offices in Horsham, PA as a manager of financial and administrative services.
An avid Giants fan, he will be remembered for his Sunday Game Day traditions with his neighbors and friends in South Plainfield, NJ. George had a knack for special tailgate parties and for organizing block parties in his neighborhood.
A master with his hands, George was a skilled craftsman with a passion for wood carving and crafting. He could work magic with a few pieces of wood and showered family and friends with his creations. He prided himself on care and meticulous precision for just about everything he touched; from the burgers on the grill to the details of complicated expense reports.
Born in Newark, New Jersey, he was the son of the late George and Dorothy Meagher Sr., of Linwood and brother of the late Janice Medica, of Somers Point.
He was a 1960 graduate of Ocean City High School where he met his beloved wife of 51 years, Lynne Johnson Meagher. He graduated with an associates’ degree from Valley Forge Military Academy and attended Akron University.
A Lance Corporal in the United States Marine Corps, he served during the Vietnam War era and received Good Conduct and Sharp-shooting medals.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by his children Greg and Joanne Meagher, of Sicklerville, NJ and Wendy and Mike Gargan, of Chalfont, PA; grandchildren Kaitlyn, Taylor and Emily Meagher and Dillon, Riley and Cole Gargan; three sisters, Barbara Meade, of Linwood; Shirley Pfirman, of Crisfield, MD and Patricia Meagher-Walker, of Sykesville, MD. Also surviving are precious nieces and nephews.
