The Double Play

Playing softball with Steve on the Caesars squad was a lot of fun.  We played hard and then went to the bar to talk trash.  Many times to bust on each other for any blunders made during the game.  Steve was very good at it. This team was no place for thin skin!

The team was playing in a national tournament in Rochester, NY.  We had a good run and were down to the last three teams.  In the Semi-final, undefeated game, we fell way behind early.   We knew we were capable of scoring many runs so there was no panic.

Late in the game, our bats came alive and the big rally began.  We scored 5 runs but were still down by 3.  Men were on 1st and 3rd with 1 out when Steve came to the plate. We were thinking Mr. Stand Up Double was going to rip a line drive to the fence and we would be on our way to victory.  Unfortunately, Steve hit a weak ground ball to shortstop. As Steve was not very fast,  it resulted in a double play and we ultimately lost the game.

On the way home,  about 8 of us were in a rented RV. My younger brother, Bobby (Elmo) was driving.  There was a lot of drinking and busting chops going on.   I decided to take a shot at Steve.

I  gave the guys a play by play of “The Double Play”.  How the shortstop fielded the ball, threw it to the second baseman, who ordered sandwiches for the entire team, after the sandwiches were delivered and eaten, he threw to first completing the double play and beating Steve to the bag by twenty feet.  Steve chased me around the RV for the next two minutes.

In truth, Steve could dish it out and take it.  He was a great teammate and friend.
