Obituary for George E. Govans Jr.

George E. Govans, Jr. (affectionately known as “Sonny) departed this life peacefully in his home on Tuesday, December 12, 2017. He was born in York, Pennsylvania, to the late George Govans, Sr. and Cecelia McKinney. The family later moved to the Coney Island section of Brooklyn, New York, where George spent his early childhood years and attended public school. After graduating from high school, George attended special trade school in Coney Island for television and radio repair. In later years, George, along with his parents, moved to Atlantic City, NJ, where he eventually began his career as a boat builder for 15 years with the Pacemaker Boat Company in Lower Banks, NJ. After the company dissolved, George’s work followed the trade of his dad and he worked in the tailor shop as a presser and tailor assistant at the old Shelburne Hotel on the boardwalk in Atlantic City and also at Bally’s Grand and various other casinos .

George met the love of his life, Dalila Cruz, and they were married on August 25, 1961. They were blessed with 2 loving daughters. Many of their years together were spent in Atlantic City, where they raised their daughters, and in later years they moved to Galloway, New Jersey, where they resided until their deaths.

Brother Govans, as he was known by his church family, personally gave his life to the Lord, Jesus Christ in the early 90’s, and attended the Community Baptist Church under various pastoral leaderships. In later years, he was physically unable to attend, but remained on the membership books and financially supported the church faithfully under the current leadership of Pastor Elias Thomas, with whom he developed a special bond and friendship during his many household visits. George also enjoyed the friendships of Bishop Dr. Fred and Sylvia Jerkins, and Elder Charles and Brenda Goddard and family who would often stop by to encourage him.

In his younger years, George enjoyed deep sea fishing, playing cards, billiards and he was an excellent bowler in the Egg Harbor leagues. He was a wonderful husband, father and grandfather. If one word could be used to describe George it would be, “GIVER.” If you had a need, George would try to fill it. Because of his gift to give, George lived an abundantly blessed life and has been a blessing to all who had the pleasure of knowing and loving him. He will be sorely missed!

George was predeceased by his parents, George, Sr., and Cecelia; his wife Dalila of 56 years; and nine aunts and uncles. He leaves to mourn two daughters, Zenaida Lucas and Cynthia C. Stern; son-in-law, Dorian Q. Stern; two grandchildren, Dorian A. Stern and Chelsea B. Lucas; two sisters-in-law (Maria & Elizabeth), brother-in-law (David), as well as a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

A viewing will be from 4 pm to 5 pm, on Wednesday, December 20, 2017, at Community Baptist Church, 234 MN. New Jersey Ave, in Atlantic City. A Homegoing Service will be held at 5 pm. Burial will be held on Thursday, December 21, 2017 at 1 pm, at the Atlantic County Veterans Cemetery in Estell Manor.
