Obituary for Yolanda F. Shannon (Gerald)

Shannon, Yolanda “Faye Gerald”, 54, affectionately known as the “Fabulous One” passed away on Tuesday, January 16, 2018 surrounded by her loving and supportive family.

Faye fought a good fight. She put up a fierce battle until the very end.

Faye was born on January 25, 1963 to the late Walter Gerald, Sr. and Leila Mae Gerald.

Faye was a graduate of Pleasantville High School, class of 1981. She led the Greyhounds to state titles in 1978 and 1981. She also powered her team to a South Jersey Championship in 1980. Faye totaled 1,875 points in her career, averaging 21.5 points per game in her senior season, a record that has not been broken. That impressive number earned her the award of Carino Basketball Club Female Player of the Year in which she was inducted into the South Jersey Hall of Fame. Following high school, Faye received a full scholarship to St. John’s University, winning the Big East in 1982 and 1984. Basketball was definitely her passion, which she used her skills to mentor to the young people; developing their skills in basketball and leadership. Faye coached the Stockton University Women’s Basketball team for seven years, as well as Atlantic City girls PAL for two years. She also conducted many youth basketball camps in Pleasantville to give back to the community.

Faye’s beloved son, Wesley, was her heart and soul. She dedicated her life into assuring her son a positive and successful future. Faye’s perseverance shined through after the passing of her late husband, Richard Shannon, Jr. Since she was the only living parent of Wesley, Faye worked hard to order his steps into entrepreneurship beginning with acquiring Wilson Child Care Center, next establishing Ash Wes Development, LLC. and was currently a Real Estate Investor. She also embedded the love of basketball, which Wesley truly shined! Wesley has followed into his father’s footsteps as a member of the United States Air Force.

Faye was predeceased by her father, the late Walter Gerald, Sr.; her beloved husband, the late Richard Shannon, Jr. in 2003; her brother, Keith aka Jamil Gerald; and her brother in law, Ricky Pettigrew, Sr.

Faye is survived by her beloved son, Wesley Walter Shannon – Airman 1st Class, of Buena; her mother, Leila Mae Gerald of Egg Harbor City; a brother Walter Gerald Jr., her sisters, Vanessa Gerald of Galloway, Rev. LaJuanda Gerald-Pettigrew of Pleasantville, Kim Cotton (Kirk) of Virginia, Shawn Fitzgerald (Donald) of Galloway, Monique Gaines APN, BC (Michael) of Galloway, and Kyra Welch of Absecon. She is also survived by her special cousins, Clementine and Justine of SC; god-daughters, Kiarra Brown, ESQ., and Cearah Pitts Freeman; nieces, Tara, Kimia, Ashley, Tia, JaLisa, Kiarra and Kayla; nephews, Walter (Mike-Mike) Keith, Jamil, Dont’e, Lamar, Quamir and Mikey; special friends, Jeannie McKay, Jerry Walker, Rodey Smith and Ozzie Henderson. She will also be sadly missed but never forgotten by all of her extended family and friends.

A special thanks to Allison Gibase, RN., Marianne Herman, Nurse Practitioner of AtlantiCare Cancer Institute and Dr. Kane, former head of AtlantiCare Oncology Department in English Creek, NJ, who held an extra special place in Faye’s life because she trusted one hundred percent of her healthcare treatment.

Faye has left her mark on all who has known her, she will be deeply missed.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church in memory of Yolanda “Faye” Gerald Shannon.
